Urban farmers interested in learning how to safely harvest, store and transport produce are invited to a webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “Food Safety for Urban Farms” is the next webinar in the Urban Agriculture Catalyst Project series.

Andre Salazar, food safety specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, will join as a guest speaker. The webinar will be live from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., including a question-and-answer session. To participate, please register online.

A video recording of the webinar will be published after the event on the ISU Urban Agriculture Webinars page.

During the webinar, Salazar will share food safety information for fruit and vegetable production for producers of common urban farm products. The information is an overview of the common food safety hazards in produce farm operations and the optimal corrective actions to minimize fruit and vegetable contamination risks. The webinar is part of the ISU Extension and Outreach Safe Produce Program educational material that provides technical assistance to Iowa produce farmers to assure the production of fruits and vegetables safe for human consumption.

Food safety is vital to the longevity, sustainability and reputation of urban and small farms. For growers to participate in commercial markets or public distribution, further training is required. Submit your questions during the webinar and visit the Iowa State University Safe Produce website to learn more.
